Glycerol, better known as glycerin, is a liquid with high viscosity. Glycerin is used in the food industry as a solvent or sweetener, for example in candy, baked goods, and butter. Glycerin is derived from natural fats and oils and is produced synthetically. It can be used as a preservative and/or flavor enhancer.
It is an approved substance with E number 422.
